Our test laboratory carries out tests according to DIN EN ISO 20344, Sections 6.6, 6.7 and 6.8, in an accredited procedure for the determination of water vapour permeability, water vapour absorption and the water vapour coefficient of upper, lining and tongue materials used in footwear. The test is particularly relevant for leather and leather fibre materials in shoes, safety and occupational footwear as well as technical protective equipment. It evaluates the extent to which a material allows water vapour transmission and is able to absorb moisture. These parameters are essential for wearing comfort and moisture management in footwear.

Test procedure

For testing, specimens from upper, lining or tongue materials are first conditioned under defined climatic conditions. Subsequently, separate tests are performed to determine water vapour permeability and water vapour absorption under standardized conditions. From the individual results, the water vapour coefficient is calculated. The standardized procedure allows reproducible comparison of different footwear materials and material combinations.

The test is used in the development and quality assurance of upper materials, lining materials and tongue components. Typical applications include safety and occupational footwear according to EN ISO footwear standards, leather shoes, casual footwear and materials for personal protective equipment.
