Testing methods
Our test laboratory performs testing according to DIN EN ISO 22751 as an accredited test method to determine the bending force of rubber- or plastic-coated fabrics. The method quantifies the resistance of a flexible coated fabric to defined bending and therefore allows differences in stiffness and flexibility between coated materials to be evaluated objectively.
Testing according to DIN EN ISO 22751
Bending force is determined using the bar method as a two-point bending test. The rectangular specimen is clamped vertically in a rotating fixture. During a defined rotational movement, the specimen is bent against a vertical measuring bar, and the force acting on the bar at a specified bending angle is recorded.
The standard specifies different parameter sets with different bending lengths. Unless otherwise specified, parameter set A is used as the standard configuration. The bending force is measured at a bending angle of 60° and reported in millinewtons.
At least three specimens are tested in the machine direction and at least three in the cross-machine direction. For single-sided coated materials, the coating can be tested under both extension and compression bending. The two bending modes can also be evaluated separately for double-sided coated fabrics. The overall material thickness is additionally determined.
Applications of the test
DIN EN ISO 22751 is suitable for comparative evaluation of the flexibility and bending stiffness of coated fabrics. Bending behaviour can be influenced by factors such as coating type and thickness, substrate fabric, polymer formulation, lamination and manufacturing conditions.
Separate testing under extension and compression bending provides particularly useful information for asymmetric material constructions. Differences between machine and cross-machine directions can also be assessed. The method is therefore suitable for comparing artificial leather, technical coated fabrics and other flexible coated or composite sheet materials.
Typical applications include Automotive + Mobility, Furniture + Contract Furnishing and Technical Textiles + Protective Equipment.
Related tests
For materials used in automotive interiors, the bending force test according to VDA 230-209 provides a related testing method. Other mechanical properties of coated fabrics can be determined by tensile testing according to DIN EN ISO 1421 and tear testing according to DIN EN ISO 4674-1.
