Textiles - Determination of thickness of textiles and textile products

Our test laboratory carries out tests according to DIN EN ISO 5084 in an accredited procedure for the determination of the thickness of textiles and textile products under a defined pressure. The standard is applicable to textiles but excludes textile floor coverings, nonwovens, geotextiles and coated fabrics, for which separate standards are available.
Test procedure
For testing, the textile material is placed between measuring surfaces and subjected to a specified pressure. As textile materials may be compressible under load, both the contact area and the applied force are defined by the standard. Thickness measurements are taken at several locations to obtain representative values for the material.
The test is used for woven fabrics, knitted fabrics, warp-knitted fabrics, textile sheet materials, apparel textiles, technical textiles and textile intermediate products. For coated fabrics, DIN EN ISO 2286-3 is specified instead, as this standard covers the thickness measurement of coated flexible sheet materials.
