Melamine is a nitrogen compound and a raw material for the production of synthetic resins used in melamine resin products such as tableware, furniture coatings, and adhesives. Melamine resin is particularly hard, scratch-resistant, heat-resistant, and relatively inexpensive. However, melamine is classified as a substance of very high concern because it can be released upon contact with food and cause kidney stones and bladder cancer, which is why its use is restricted in certain areas.
