Linear Abrasion and Rubbing Resistance Testing of Materials and Surfaces

Our laboratory performs linear abrasion tests on leather, artificial leather, textiles, coated materials, plastics and other surfaces. In these test methods, a defined rubbing element is repeatedly moved in a straight line over the specimen surface. The controlled relative motion is used to examine wear, abrasion and surface changes caused by repeated mechanical rubbing.

Depending on the test method, parameters such as contact force, rubbing element, stroke length, number of cycles and other test conditions are specified. The assessment may include abrasion marks, changes in colour or gloss, damage to or wear-through of coatings, and material transfer between the specimen and the rubbing medium.

The linear motion distinguishes these methods from rotational or multidirectional abrasion tests. It is particularly suited to surfaces that are repeatedly rubbed or stroked in a defined direction during use.

Depending on the material and test method, we offer testing using the Crockmeter Method, Hand Abrasion Test (Abrex) and Veslic Process.

Linear abrasion testing forms part of Abrasion and Wear. Further mechanical and physical test methods are listed in our overview of Physical Testing.

Below you will find the available linear abrasion and rubbing tests.
