Testing the Resistance of Materials to Fuels and Lubricants
Our laboratory tests the ability of materials to repel liquid operating fluids such as fuels and lubricants. The test examines how a material behaves under defined contact with the test fluid and whether the liquid is absorbed, penetrates the material or is retained by the material structure.
A defined quantity of the operating fluid is applied to the specimen under specified conditions. Depending on the test method, absorption, penetration, spreading and visible changes in the material are assessed. For porous, textile or multilayer materials, surface structure, coating, porosity and layer construction can significantly influence the behaviour towards the fluid.
The test is particularly relevant for non-metallic materials and composite structures used in vehicles, including textiles, artificial leather, coated materials, plastics, foams and other components that may come into contact with fuels or lubricants.
Testing the repellency to operating fluids forms part of Burning Behavior and Flammability. Related tests concerning the resistance of materials to liquids and chemicals can also be found under Resistance Tests.
