Testing for VW / Volkswagen – Requirements for materials and components in vehicle interiors

Our laboratory has been performing tests according to VW specifications and PV/TL standards of Volkswagen AG for many years. These test procedures are a key part of material evaluation, approval, and quality assurance in automotive interiors and are applied to materials, semi-finished products, and near-production components.

VW test specifications define detailed requirements for leather, synthetic leather, textiles, plastics, foams, coatings, as well as composite and functional materials. In addition to classical material tests, the focus is particularly on application-oriented load and surface tests that simulate real-life vehicle use conditions.

Typical automotive interior components include:

  • seat systems and seat covers (leather, synthetic leather, textile covers, laminated foams)

  • instrument panels and cockpit surfaces (soft-touch, plastic, and painted components)

  • door trims and side panels (highly stressed contact and grip areas)

  • steering wheels and control elements (surfaces exposed to abrasion, sweat, and grip stress)

  • headliners, pillar trims, and textile interior components

  • decorative and trim parts (painted, coated, or structured surfaces)

  • sealing systems and functional components (e.g., stick-slip and friction systems)

  • carpets, inserts, and textile floor coverings

  • foam and composite systems (e.g., leather/synthetic leather laminated onto foam substrates)

  • components with emission-critical requirements (interior air quality, odor, fogging tests)

Tested properties and areas include:

  • surface durability and usage properties (abrasion, scratch resistance, writing effect, color transfer, hand abrasion, and resistance to mechanical stress according to PV and TL methods such as PV 3906, PV 3952, PV 3974)

  • soiling behavior, cleanability, and care resistance (assessment of dirt pickup and cleanability of interior materials according to PV 3353, PV 3356, PV 3968)

  • mechanical material properties and dimensional stability (elongation, flexural stiffness, seam strength, friction behavior, and dimensional stability under load according to PV 3903, PV 3946, PV 3909)

  • climatic resistance and aging behavior (climate cycling, heat aging, humidity exposure, and hydrolysis resistance according to PV 1200, PV 2005, PV 3959)

  • emission behavior and interior air quality (fogging, VOC and condensate formation, formaldehyde emissions, and odor testing according to PV 3920, PV 3015, PV 3900 as well as VW 50180)

  • thermal, chemical, and media resistance (behavior against creams, oils, fuels, cleaning agents, and hot-air exposure according to PV 3922, PV 3964, VW TL 52064)

  • fire behavior and safety-related properties (flammability of interior materials according to VW TL 1010 and comparable PV/specification tests)

  • material compatibility and functional behavior in assemblies (stick-slip behavior, friction, noise and contact analysis according to PV 3981, as well as functional testing of sealing and contact areas)

  • optical and physical surface characterization (gloss, reflection, structure, writing effect, as well as whitening and impact resistance according to PV 3975, PV 3966)

Below you will find VW PV, TL, and specification tests offered by our laboratory, as well as additional relevant automotive test standards (e.g., DIN, VDA, and ISO standards) applied within the framework of VW requirements. Please ask also for further needs regarding costumer Volkswagen!
