Genetics and species identification

The molecular biologists at the department are interested in the research of genetics of mammals (above all cattle), moulds and bacteria. Currently, for instance intensive investigations are performed with regard to the cattle breed, the properties of hide and the leathers produced thereof. The aim is to find out if the quality of the hide and the leather can be derived from the genetic background.

Furthermore, the department uses microbiological methods, in order to determine the species of an unknown leather or fur sample.

Identification of the species also plays a role in microbiological investigations. For instance, isolates are gained from material samples and determined, in order to identify biocide-resistant stems or material-damaging microorganisms.
