9 Burning behavior and flammability

We perform tests on the burning behavior and flammability of materials according to numerous national and international standards and specifications.

Our flame tests include both standardized and customer-specific procedures for evaluating the ignitability, flame spread, burning rate, and flame resistance of various materials.

A key focus is on material testing for automotive interior components (various OEMs).
As a designated Technical Service A, we also carry out testing and consulting in accordance with UN ECE-R 118, including type approval through Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).

We conduct comprehensive tests on the flammability and burning behavior of materials according to a wide range of national and international standards and specifications, including FMVSS 302, DIN 75200, ISO 3759, DBL 5307.10, VW TL 1010, and VW PV 3343.

Our flame tests cover both standardized procedures and custom-developed testing methods, allowing us to evaluate the ignitability, combustibility, flame spread, and burning rate of various materials. We also measure parameters such as afterburn time, smoldering time, burning rate, self-extinguishing behavior, and flame resistance. In addition, we now use a cone calorimeter.

A key focus is testing automotive interiour materials for manufacturers such as Volkswagen, Daimler, BMW, Porsche, PSA, Stellantis, and many others.

Tested materials include artificial leather / coated textiles, leather and leather fiber materials, textiles / yarns, plastics, elastomers, films, foams, and composite materials.

As a designated Technical Service A, FILK carries out tests and technical consulting according to UN ECE Regulation No. 118 (ECE-R 118), Annexes 6–9, also supporting type approval via the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).

We offer horizontal and vertical flame tests, determinations of flame spread on vertically oriented samples, flame retardancy tests, and ignition tests using a smoldering cigarette or gas flame as the ignition source.

The fire behavior of materials is a central safety-relevant property and often critical for release testing and type-approval documentation. With our accredited testing procedures, we provide the basis for the safety assessment and approval of your materials, supporting product development and material qualification.
